Bone-cruncher

#Crawl is good, old-fashioned, stressful fun. The bone-crunching actioner also works as a Survival 101 during a Supertyphoon complexed by dozens of hungry alligators.

Haley (Kaya Scodelario) drives back to her hometown in Florida in the middle of a Category 5 hurricane to save her father Dave (Barry Pepper) when she and her father get trapped in the house amid rising, alligator-infested floodwaters.

What works: taut, efficient storytelling; believable deadly stakes, those darned alligators and the convincing storm; and dedicated performances from Scodelario and Pepper.

It reminded me of Jurassic Park – NOT in the same inventiveness and intensity – but the Murphy’s Law situation when everything that should go bad does, but the leads manage to do what must be done. If you’re joined in the audience by jumpy people, the experience can get a little loud by a few screams.

What doesn’t: story isn’t exactly unique. But hey, It didn’t say it was so.

If you’re stuck out in the rain this weekend, you can try crawling into a theater to see this and be happy there aren’t alligators swimming in our baha.

Crawl is Rated R-13.
